Body Awareness

I know most of us feel we don't have time to stay fit and we make excuses not to exercise. In the past I know I've felt like if I couldn't be consistent and exercise for the same amount of time or the same number of days each week then it was pointless to even try. Recently I've adopted the mind set of doing what I can when I can. This is what that looks like:

  • Using the time I have; this may be each time I get up from my desk I do 5 jumping jacks or every other time I get up I do push ups off my counter

  • I also have adopted "Dance Parties" I take 5 or 10 minutes out of my day to do a "Dance Party" this can be during your work day or in the morning before you leave or in the evening when you get home- I don't do these everyday but I do them a few times a week and it really helps shake off any tension or stress in your body, this is a great way to lift your mood.

  • For those who are dressed up and don't want to get sweaty; I totally get this, before working from home this was my major excuse for not wanting to exercise in the middle of the day. An easy way to get some extra movement in, is by doing the simple things that we have heard a thousand times. Park further away, take the stairs, or add a relaxed walk in your day. Stopping to take a small walk even around your office, outside or inside can boost your mood.

I think the most important thing to take from this tip is to adopt a mindset of something is better than nothing when it comes to movement in the body.

I do dance parties too!!! Part of my morning routine is when washing my face and brushing my teeth, I play the song 'Good Morning' by Max Frost and totally let loose!

I've also been challenging myself to brief daily walks. I've come to understand how vital moving my body is to my nervous system regulation, mood, and energy. Now my kids or husband frequently join me too!

I love this Mel! Yes, once I stopped trying to set major movement goals and just started moving in any way that fits my day I think I’ve started not only feeling better but getting fit again! It’s even better when the family joins in, Eleanor is a great dance partner!
